There are many reasons why a Saturn or Saab A/C compressor may stop working. The simplest one is lack of use. The system needs to be run periodically to keep the refrigerant lubricant running through the system. Not having enough, or having too much, refrigerant in the system can also cause the part to malfunction.

Signs That It's Time to Replace a Saturn or Saab A/C Compressor

Here are a few signs that it may be time to get a replacement for a Saab or Saturn auto air conditioning system:

  • If the compressor suddenly starts making a lot more noise than it used to, it could be a sign that the part is falling apart internally.
  • If turning on the A/C in the car does not result in colder air, the clutch may be bad. Check the voltage on the clutch by connecting the wire to a test light to determine voltage. For some units, buying and replacing just the clutch is possible. For others, it requires replacing the whole unit.
  • If the air coming from the air conditioner is not as cold as it once was, it can signal a pressure problem in the unit. Check the pressure on the high and low sides of the system. Pressure irregularities can mean a clog somewhere in the system or a compressor that isn't working correctly.

A-Air sells A/C components for dozens of auto manufacturers from popular brands like Saab and Saturn to short-run models like Sterling and the Land Rover Defender. In addition to compressors, A-Air also sells condensers, evaporators, driers, accumulators, tubes and valves for Saab and Saturn vehicles.
