Whether it's a Volkswagen or a Volvo, the A/C parts are essentially the same. A compressor, condenser, evaporator and drier make up the system that cools the air that enters the car.

Using Volvo A/C Parts

This does not mean that all Volvo A/C parts, or all a/c parts in general, are interchangeable. Each auto model and year has components that are specific to that particular car. Most Volvos have a plate and fin evaporator, for example, while many Volkswagens have serpentine evaporators.

An evaporator works like this:

  1. Liquid coolant is pumped into the evaporator from the condenser.
  2. The liquid coolant flows through the evaporator, making it very cold.
  3. Warm air passes over the evaporator on its way into the car. The liquid coolant absorbs the heat from the air, making the air cooler and the coolant warmer.
  4. The warmed coolant turns back into a vapor.
  5. The vapor is pumped out of the evaporator and into the accumulator or drier.

The difference between the two are in how the passes are set up to allow warm air to pass through it on its way into the cabin of the car. A serpentine evaporator has a long coil that wraps around for the length of the board. A plate and fin evaporator has several groups of plates separated by baffles through which the air passes. It is more efficient.
